Founded in 1862, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum is one of the oldest public art institutions in the United States, recognised for its longstanding commitment to championing artistic innovation, working directly with living artists and fostering cultural engagement through exhibitions, education and community programmes.
Its collection spans Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary art, featuring works by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol, displayed across historic galleries, contemporary exhibition spaces and the expanded Gundlach Building.
The museum approached us to develop a new online collections portal that would extend access to its holdings, enabling audiences to request digital image licences and submit research enquiries, while translating the atmosphere of its physical galleries into a digital environment that captures the scale, presence and immersive qualities of its installation works.
I led a series of remote workshops with the museum's staff, translating feedback into information architecture and a suite of interactive prototypes. These explored key page templates, navigable floor plans highlighting works on display, and a request cart for managing image licensing and research enquiries.
